Chapter 24

David stared at the phone in his hand. Just call her, David. He’d been in the kitchen of his house, leaning against the counter, and staring at the blue cell phone in his hand for the past ten minutes.

The front door opened, prompting David to quickly set the phone down. “What’s up guys?” he said to Jason and Mark as they walked in, accompanied by Sidra.

“You not foolin’ nobody,” Mark teased, tossing his book bag on the floor by the steps. “You still staring at the damn phone, huh?”

“No,” David lied.

“You’re full of shit,” Mark laughed, pointing to the phone on the counter. “The phone is right there.”

Jason shook his head at David’s embarrassed expression. “Just call her, man,” he urged. “She gave you her number and agreed to go out with you,” he reminded. “All you gotta do is set it up.”

“He being corny,” Mark commented, flopping down on the couch.

David waved his hand at the guys dismissively, then opened the refrigerator and stuck his head in.

“You tryna find your courage in there?” Mark mocked, earning a backhand from Sidra. He laughed.

“You guys leave David alone,” Sidra chided, putting her hands on her hips. “Mark, you of all people know how he is around girls.”

“Yeah, I know, his balls draw up,” Mark laughed.

David grabbed a container of leftover takeout from the fridge and slammed the door shut. “I’m right here you know,” he fussed.

“We’re just messing around,” Jason chuckled.

Sidra shook her head, then turned her attention to David. “Sweetie, you don’t have to be nervous,” Sidra assured him. “Like Jase said, she already agreed to a date, you just have to set it up.”

David sighed as he walked over to the dining room table. “I know,” he sulked “I have no idea what to do or where to take her.” He sat down in a chair. “It’s not like I’m swimming in money.”

“Who says you have to be?” Sidra frowned.

Mark sucked his teeth. “Growing up around your spoiled, uppity ass, is where he got that idea,” he joked.

Sidra glared at Mark. “You calling me a snob?”

“Oh absolutely,” Mark confirmed, as Jason nodded vigorously.

“Whatever,” Sidra huffed. “I’m not a snob okay. It just so happens that my boyfriend is well-off...he also happens to be older. But that doesn’t mean that if I was dating someone my own age, that I would expect expensive restaurants and carriage rides,” she argued.

“Why you gotta bring up carriage rides?” Mark sneered. “My man is feeling down enough already.”

Sidra gave the back of Mark’s head a light slap. “Boy, shut up.”

“David look, you and Nicole are both in college, I’m sure she doesn’t expect some fancy date,” Jason placated.

David nodded slowly. “Where did you guys go on your first date with Chasity and Malajia?” he asked.

“I took Chaz to a restaurant,” Jason answered.

“Same with me and Mel,” Mark added.

“Was it expensive?”

Both Jason and Mark shook their heads. Noticing the dilemma on David’s face, Mark sighed loudly. “Look man, if you’re scared about having to wash dishes or some shit, just do what Josh does,” Mark suggested.
